Staying Safe During an Electrical Emergency

  • Keep Yourself and Others Safe

Do not approach or touch exposed wiring, damaged electrical equipment or anything producing smoke, sparks, excessive heat or a burning smell.

    • Keep people and animals away from the affected area.

    • Do not remove covers or attempt an electrical repair.

    • Do not repeatedly reset an MCB or RCD that continues to trip.

    • Only switch off the electricity at the main switch if it is clearly accessible and safe to do so.

    • Never put yourself at risk to obtain photographs or video.

    • If there is a fire, serious electric shock or immediate danger to life or property, leave the area and call 999 or 112.

  • Power Cut or a Fault Inside Your Property?

If the whole property has lost power, check whether neighbouring properties or street lighting are also affected. The problem may be an interruption to the local electricity network rather than a fault within your electrical installation.

UK Power Networks maintains the electricity network across London, the South East and East of England. Check its live power-cut map before requesting an electrician. You can also report or obtain information about a power cut by calling 105.

If neighbouring properties still have power, only part of your building is affected, or an MCB or RCD repeatedly trips, the problem may be within your fixed electrical installation and an emergency electrician may be required.

When Should You Request an Emergency Electrician?

Request urgent assistance if a fault within the fixed electrical installation creates a safety risk or seriously disrupts the use of the property. Common electrical emergencies include:

  • Complete or partial loss of power

  • MCBs, RCBOs or RCDs that repeatedly trip or will not reset

  • Burning smells from fixed wiring, sockets, switches or distribution equipment

  • Smoke, sparking or excessive heat from the fixed installation

  • Exposed or damaged wiring

  • Electric shocks or tingling sensations from fixed electrical accessories

  • Buzzing or crackling from a consumer unit or distribution board

  • Overheating, melting or scorching

  • Water entering sockets, lighting, wiring or distribution equipment

  • Damaged consumer units, distribution boards or switchgear

  • Loss of essential lighting, heating supplies or other critical fixed circuits

  • Single-phase or three-phase electrical supply faults

  • Faults affecting communal areas, workplaces or building operations

Fault-Finding, Making Safe and Repair Where Possible

The electrician's first priority will be to identify immediate risks and make the electrical installation safe. Depending on the fault and the parts required, the visit may include:

  • Inspecting and testing the affected fixed wiring

  • Tracing the source of power loss or repeated tripping

  • Isolating unsafe circuits or equipment supplies

  • Repairing damaged fixed wiring or accessories

  • Replacing suitable components where available

  • Restoring power where it is safe and reasonably possible

  • Providing a temporary safe solution where a permanent repair cannot be completed immediately

  • Explaining the fault and any further work required

  • Issuing appropriate electrical documentation where the completed work requires it

  • Providing a quotation for larger remedial works or a return visit

How the Emergency Booking Service Works

  • Step 1

    Request Availability

Enter the property postcode, contact details, building type and a description of the electrical problem.

  • Step 2

    Provide Supporting Information

Tell us when the problem began, what is affected and whether there is tripping, heat, smoke, sparking, water damage or exposed wiring. Photographs or a short video may be uploaded only where it is completely safe to obtain them.

  • Step 3

    Engineer Availability Is Confirmed

AC1 will confirm whether an appropriate engineer is available, the applicable price band and the expected arrival window.

  • Step 4

    Pay Securely by Card

The travel and initial on-site attendance charge must be paid by card before the booking is confirmed.

  • Step 5

    Engineer Dispatch

The customer receives confirmation when the electrician begins travelling. The call-out payment becomes non-refundable from this point.

  • Step 6

    Attendance and Additional Charges

The electrician investigates the fault and makes the installation safe. Additional time, materials and other chargeable expenses are explained and charged separately.

Clear Emergency Electrician Pricing

The initial call-out charge includes travel to the property and the first 30 minutes on site. The applicable price is based on the service address and the engineer's confirmed dispatch time. The confirmed rate band remains unchanged throughout that attendance.
